In the 1840's, famed American poet Walt Whitman lovingly referred to New York's South Street district as a "Forest of Masts" - and in this extremely detailed twilight scene it is easy to see what he meant. The viewpoint is taken from near the Wall Street Ferry Terminal, looking northeast along South Street toward Brooklyn Bridge. Berthed alongside is the celebrated clipper ship "Dreadnought" with her distinctive figurehead.
