This nocturnal painting depicts the historic Halifax waterfront as it would have been in 1896. Roughly where Historic Properties and the Sheraton Hotel stand today, in the centre we can see the Pickford and Black wharves - a hub of commercial activity in their time. Founded in 1875, Pickford and Black supplied ship's provisions, traded in the West Indies, and also shipped passengers and freight. To the left stands the domed cupola of the original Dominion Building which housed Halifax's Post Office, Customs House, and Railway Department. Today the former Dominion Building is home to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. To the right, set against the backdrop of Citadel Hill stands the city's iconic Town Clock.
